CEO Message

Y'ello,

MTN is proud to be the leading telecommunications company in Uganda. Since MTN's launch in October  1998 we have managed to establish unprecedented consumer popularity and brand recognition . We were voted Investor of the Year 2000 by the Uganda Investment Authority and subsequently named as the leading Telecommunications Company in East Africa in the annual and prestigious PriceWaterhouseCoopers most respected company survey.

In a country that had one of the lowest tele-densities in Africa, MTN has consistently played a leading role in stimulating a liberalised telecoms sector such, that teledensity has more than quadrupled since our arrival in Uganda.

We now cover in excess of 150 cities, towns and villages in Uganda and our coverage initiatives in rural counties and sub-counties, where no modern telecommunications service has ever existed, continues unabated. Through our quality and extensive network coverage using GSM wireless and fixed lines, the average villager can use a phone to speak to anyone, anywhere, thus touching the lives of millions of Ugandans, directly and indirectly. MTN villagePhone, a joint venture between MTN Uganda and the Grameen Foundation of the United States and in partnership with local micro-finance institutions, forms part of our public access strategy, providing access to basic telephony service in remote areas.

Other successful achievements that deserve mention in this brief introduction are our Fibre to the Door Project in Kampala now extended to other parts of the country . These investments together with MTN's participation in the planned East African Submarine System (EASSy) ensure that MTN is firmly placed as a relevant regional and international telecoms company.
This web site is intended to give you a series of snapshots of the big picture - about who we are, what we believe in, our product and service offering and the major initiatives we have implemented to develop not only the organization, but also Uganda, through technological innovations and community involvement as a responsible corporate citizen.

Welcome to the Y'ello world of MTN Uganda!

Themba Khumalo
