Kampala, Uganda: The National University Sports Federation of Uganda (NUSFU) has incorporated the recently launched game, Woodball into the National MTN Inter-University sports disciplines.
NUSFU made the announcement a few days to the scheduled date of the inaugural Inter-University Woodball Championship scheduled for Saturday 26th April 2008 at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
“This is really a new sport in Uganda, Africa and the world at large but its popularity has grown tremendously. The game has spread to 10 universities and 15 secondary schools since its introduction in Uganda in 2006,” said NUSFU’s Patrick Sebuliba.
Justifying its inclusion on the NUSFU calendar, Sebuliba added, “With such a growing Woodball – playing base in the country we decided to make it part of the games in which the Universities would compete.”
“Besides this, we are also using Saturday’s tournament to select the team that will represent the country in the All Africa Inter-University Games that we are hosting a few months from now. We want to build a squad that has been well tested that will competently compete with the continent’s best.”
Speaking at the function, MTN’s PRO Sheila Kangwagye reiterated the company’s commitment to the development of sports in Uganda. ‘’We want to offer the best possible support to NUSFU so that the country is ably represented at the All Africa Inter-University Games in July.”
The NUSFU calendar kicked off with athletics and Basketball at Nkozi and Gulu University respectively and is ongoing for a period of one year.
