Kampala, Uganda: After the unprecedented and overwhelming success of MTN Zone, MTN has taken the decision to make the product a permanent feature in their product portfolio after more than 2 million people opted to sign onto the innovative tariff. Initially launched as a promotional offer on 28th July, 2008, the offer was due to end at the end of September this year.
While explaining the product’s phenomenal success, MTN Chief Commercial Officer Erik van Veen said, “The number of customers who have signed on to MTN’s innovative tariff structure, MTN Zone, has now hit two million, one of the broadest product uptakes in the ICT industry, barely three months after the introduction of the offer in Uganda.”
According to recent statistics from the company, the average discount during the day now stands at 40% and averages at 80% in the evening. “In addition, there has been a 70% increase in call usage since MTN Zone was launched compared to pre-Zone period” said van Veen.
Customers who migrate to MTN Zone benefit from tariff discounts tied to when and where they make their calls. Those discounts can range from 10% to as high as 99%. With an average discount of 40 percent, a call of one minute duration in some areas and certain times costs UGX 288 down from UGX 420, a saving of UGX 132 per minute.
As a measure of the service’s quick embrace from customers, in just five days after its launch over 700,000 people had registered for the offer with an average of eleven people connecting per second during the busiest hour. Within two weeks, over 1 million customers had registered, making MTN Zone the most successful product uptake ever in East Africa. Uganda’s telecoms market had seen a heightened level of competitive pressure and dynamism in the recent years. MTN has dominated call cost reduction in the market which has spurred a surge in the number of subscribers. Currently, Uganda has an estimated 6.4 million mobile phone users.
