Kampala, Uganda: MTN Uganda was the winner of the overall PR excellence award during the inaugural Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) awards ceremony held at Serena Hotel on Thursday. Riding on the 5th MTN Kampala Marathon PR campaign, also fronted for the overall PR campaign of the award, MTN scooped the CSR award of the year as well.
The awards were a deserved tribute to the company’s commitment to its corporate social responsibility as the Brand and Sponsorships Manager, Aggrey Kagonyera stated moments after receiving the CSR award.
“We shall never tire when it comes to giving back to the local communities. These are the very people that have made MTN what it is today,” noted Kagonyera. “This is because when our clients are thriving, we’re also doing well and the reverse is true.”
In regard to the overall award, MTN PRO Sheila Kangwagye saw it as a challenge. “Winning this award is very gratifying. The MTN team works hard every year to ensure that the Marathon goes on smoothly and that the story of all those who benefit and stand to benefit from it is told to create awareness and increase support. ”
“Winning such an award as the inaugural PRAU Excellence Award always comes with a bigger challenge. We have to work even harder to stay on top. So instead of basking in the glories of last year we’re already planning on how to do better this year,” Sheila said.
Other winners included Nile Breweries Ltd (PR Governance Award), Civil Aviation (PR Excellence Award Private Sector) and Red Cross (PR Excellence Award).
Besides these companies, other winners on the day were the Young Communicator of the Year and Young PR practitioner of the Year, which awards were scooped by Maureen Katushabe and Catherine Ntabadde respectively.
The Golden Honors Award, in recognition of the people that have worked tirelessly to establish the PR association and also kept it afloat, was given to Mr. James Mutabazi whose works still resonates throughout all the facets of the Association.
