Kampala, Uganda: PROUD sponsors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, MTN Uganda is set to give away free tickets to the football tournament that will take place in Africa for the first time in its 80 year history.
MTN launched its much-anticipated build up and countdown to the world’s biggest sporting event in an impressive and well attended event in the lower gardens of the Kampala Serena Hotel. The occasion, held in a marquee that was transformed into a temporary soccer stadium was intended to build excitement among die-hard football fans as well as the media fraternity and promise an exciting, thrilling and fun experience in the run-up to the world’s most watched tournament and with a theme befitting the sentiment shared by many across the continent, “We Can’t Wait”.
The new and exciting World Cup campaign will include an SMS based promotion through which MTN customers will win tickets to watch the opening, quarterfinal or semi final games in South Africa in June 2010. The tickets, costing upwards of USD 230,000 will include air fare, accommodation and transportation to and from the stadiums where the games will be played in South Africa. The promotion which begins on June 10th, 2009 will see other winners take home additional prizes, including various World Cup memorabilia, TV screens, airtime, and a debit Visa Card worth USD 10, 000. In addition, the company has partnered with mobile phone manufacturers, Sony Ericsson, to give away 300 phones to lucky winners in the promotion.

To stand a chance of winning tickets to South Africa and other prizes, MTN customers will be required to type the word GO and send the SMS to 2010. There will be a monthly winner of a World Cup ticket until February 2010 while other lucky participants will win prizes including TV screens, World Cup memorabilia, mobile phones, airtime, t-shirts amongst other prizes.
