Ekiggunda ky'omwaka Postponed

Release date:7/15/2010

Kampala, Uganda: THE EKIGGUNDA Ky'omwaka, one of Uganda's biggest crowd-pullers, has been postponed to October 3 2010, sponsors MTN Uganda and Radio Simba have announced.

The Uganda Police today commended the sponsors and organisers of the Ekiggunda for taking the decision to postpone the massive celebrations. "We must thank you very much for being far sighted on this. Many people do not realise the situation we are all in right now and the need to take careful decisions," said Police Deputy Director of Operations, SCP Grace Turyagumanawe.

" As MTN we identify with and send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the July 11 bombings. This is a time of mourning for the victims of the senseless attacks and we think it would be inappropriate to hold the Ekiggunda celebrations at this time. We are sure Ugandans will appreciate this. We are taking into account the demand for the Ekiggunda to take place, which is why we are scheduling it for a later date," said MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer Isaac Nsereko yesterday.

Over 70 are believed to have died in the twin bombings in Kampala on the evening of July 11 at events where soccer fans watched the FIFA 2010 World Cup Final game. The bombings, at Kyadondo Rugby Club and Ethiopian Village in Kabalagala, are believed to be the work of terrorist groups.

Radio Simba's Collin Mutambo said this year's Ekiggunda extravaganza, initially slated for August 1 to mark Radio Simba's 12 anniversary, was expected to attract larger throngs than last year's, and preparations had been made to cater for the massive crowd. "We normally hold the Ekiggunda at Nakivubo Stadium but this year had moved it to Namboole in order to accommodate the higher capacity crowds. We know hundreds of musicians also look forward to the event in order to showcase their talent, but we must be mindful of the difficult circumstances right now," Mutambo said.
