MTN Uganda awarded as the fastest mobile network in Uganda

MTN Uganda has been recognized for the top position as the mobile operator with the fastest internet speed in Uganda, according to user-initiated tests completed on Speedtest® by Ookla®, a global leader in mobile and broadband network intelligence, testing applications, and technologies.

MTN Uganda emerged as the winner of the Speedtest Award for mobile network speed in Uganda for the third and fourth quarters of 2022.

This follows more than 12,980 user-initiated tests on the Speedtest iOS and Android mobile apps from all the major mobile carriers including Airtel and Lyca to determine who showed the fastest mobile network speeds.

MTN Uganda achieved a Speed Score of 34.55, providing faster internet speeds to its users compared to other major mobile providers who registered 32.21 and 4.34 as their Speed Score.

The telecom company also achieved the highest download speeds of 34.26mbps and upload speeds of 14.55mbps in Kampala City during the period under review.

MTN Uganda Chief Technical & Information Officer, Mr Ali Monzer, said this new award serves as validation that the telecom’s efforts to provide superior internet services to the customers have been acknowledged and are on the right track.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that our network is constantly meeting the expectations of our customers, to provide them with an exceptional experience when they choose MTN as their service provider,” he said. “Our network is designed to deliver unparalleled speed and reliability. Whether you’re streaming or browsing, you can expect fast speeds and crystal-clear connections. We’re proud to offer this service to our customers and are confident that it will meet or exceed their expectations.”

MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Ms Sylvia Mulinge, said they are delighted as a company for the award as their investment in the network is having a positive impact on the quality of services rendered to its customers.

“Our aspiration as MTN Uganda is to ensure that every person across Uganda has access and enjoys the benefits of a modern connected world and therefore we continue to invest in our network with the latest technologies to ensure that we provide these services to our customers at a quality experience,” she said.

MTN Uganda is investing approximately US$ 300 million since 2021 with the hope to expand its geographical network coverage to at least 90% countrywide.

“Speedtest Awards, presented by Ookla, are an elite designation reserved for the fastest and top-performing fixed broadband and mobile operators around the world. It is our pleasure to present MTN with the award for Fastest Mobile Network in Uganda. This recognition is a testament to their exceptional performance in Q3-Q4 2022 based on Ookla’s rigorous analysis of consumer-initiated tests taken with Speedtest,” said Ookla CEO Doug Suttles.

A few days ago, MTN Uganda was ranked as having the best network in Uganda for both data and voice in 2022 following an independent network test from a global firm, Rohde & Schwarz.

Rohde & Schwarz, an internationally recognised electronics group specializing in the fields of electronic test equipment, broadcast & media, cyber security, radio-monitoring and radiolocation, and radio communication, performed a mobile network benchmarking campaign assessing the quality of the country’s networks to rank their performance.

This also coincides with MTN Uganda’s step in implementing the Ambition 2025 strategy that seeks to build the largest digital platforms in Uganda while supporting the country’s development agenda.

MTN has been ranked as having the best network in Uganda for both data and voice in 2022 following an independent network test from a global firm, Rohde & Schwarz.

Rohde & Schwarz, an internationally recognised electronics group specializing in the fields of electronic test equipment, broadcast & media, cyber security, radio-monitoring and radiolocation, and radiocommunication, performed a mobile network benchmarking campaign assessing the quality of the country’s networks including Airtel and Lyca to rank their performance.

The firm measured smartphone voice and data performance based on ‘drive tests’ across various cities, towns and roads, covering 9,373 kilometres. More than 16,100 voice calls and 96,500 individual data service tests were performed to calculate a Network Performance Score in line with ETSI TR 103 559.

“Rohde & Schwarz SwissQual AG, as the issuer of this document, certifies that MTN Uganda attained the Best Network Performance Score for Uganda, assessed during the MTN Group Benchmarking Campaign from September 15 to December 6, 2022,” said Hanspeter Bobst, the CEO Rohde & Schwarz SwissQual AG.

He added: “We congratulate MTN Uganda for ranking first with a score of 716 out of 1000 points on the Rohde & Schwarz Network Performance Score.”

MTN Uganda scored 324 out of 400 for voice services and 392 out of 600 for data services. Rohde & Schwarz also found MTN Uganda as having voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) enabled mobile-to-mobile voice calls between two smartphones countrywide.

In terms of testing, MTN Uganda achieved an average download of up to 5MB and an average upload of up to 2MB as measured in maximal bitrate.

MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Sylvia Mulinge, said this was the second year in a row that the telecom company attained the Best Network Performance Score.

“This score is a confirmation that MTN Uganda remains the telecom company in the country with the best network for both data and services,” she said.

“As MTN Uganda, our focus is to ensure that the population enjoys the benefits of a modern connected life, and this is the reason we are investing in the latest technologies, products and services to achieve this aspiration.”

MTN Uganda won a similar award in 2022 and 2020 having attained the Best Network Performance Score following extensive tests conducted countrywide.

Ms. Mulinge said MTN is implementing the Ambition 2025 strategy to build the largest digital platforms in Uganda while supporting the country’s development agenda.

The company expedited the 4G network rollout by building 664 4G network sites in 2021 that in turn increased the 4G coverage countrywide. It also embarked on a spectrum efficiency program to migrate data traffic from 3G to 4G which improved the data experience with faster throughputs delivered on the 4G network.

MTN Uganda embraces the future of Uganda’s digitalization journey with a 5G Core network Transformation

  • MTN Uganda has announced a five-year strategic partnership with Huawei Technologies to transform and modernize its network towards a Cloud-native 5G-Capable Core network.
  • MUNA project is part of the greater MTN Group MUNIC strategy that will see MTN Uganda’s network evolve into an All-Cloud Core network.

MTN Uganda has announced a five-year strategic partnership with  Huawei Technologies, a global ICT solutions provider, to transform and modernize its network towards a Cloud-native 5G-Capable Core network.

This partnership dubbed MUNA project is part of the greater MTN Group MUNIC strategy that will see MTN Uganda’s network evolve into an All-Cloud Core network.

True to its strategic intent of ensuring that everyone enjoys the benefits of a modern connected world, this initiative shall allow MTN Uganda to have a future-oriented network with greater service agility, innovation for both consumer and industrial verticals, differentiation, improved operation efficiency and better customer experiences with higher data speeds and reduced latency. It further accelerates MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategic objective of leading digital transformation in Africa   through innovation that will step change businesses in Africa.

The project implementation shall take on a phased approach and will be overseen by Huawei technologies for the five years’ period, drawing on its unique capabilities and advanced global technology experience. This is expected to culminate into a unification of the different existing legacy core network elements (such as MSCs, HLR, HSS and EIR) into a single vendor and simplified easy-to-manage Cloud-native core network.

“Through this project, we are modernizing our core network to get ready for 5G in the near future in Uganda. However, this modernization will also help us immediately in delivering a better quality of our voice network,” said Ali Monzer, the Chief Technical and Information Officer at MTN Uganda.

MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Sylvia Mulinge, notes that the MUNA partnership with Huawei makes MTN’s core network battle-ready for the impending 5G launch.

“As MTN Uganda, we have always been the front runner of evolving technology in this country. In 2020, we were the first operator in East Africa to do a successful 5G network demonstration. While that was a non-commercial exhibition, this modernization of our network comes in as a precursor of the 5G capabilities which Uganda is going to experience soon,” she said.

“I welcome the collaboration between MTN Uganda and Huawei Technologies. We are soon launching the transition to 5G. This will not only help MTN, but other telecom companies as well to have improved Quality of Service. In this journey of digital transformation, we are running as a country, to keep pace with the rest of the world,” added Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister for ICT & National Guidance, Uganda.

“This intervention is in line with the country’s vision 2040 that aims at transformation of our society.”

Gavin Gaofei, the Managing Director at Huawei Uganda said modernization and innovation for greater technology-enabled service propositions requires sustainable partnerships and enabling ecosystems.

“We, at Huawei Technologies are proud to cement our 20 Year strategic partnership with MTN Uganda with yet another future-oriented Cloud-native 5G Core network initiative,” Gaofei said.

“We are even more excited about the potential of the solution towards stripping away complexities and creating simplicity to maximize business value and best-in-class customer experiences for Uganda.”

With this solution, MTN Uganda will not only focus its resources where and when needed, but also save on the  environmental footprint, due to the miniaturization of the telecom infrastructure – a vital element in MTN group’s ESG agenda.
