Roaming in Uganda

When traveling to Uganda, roam with MTN.

Overview

When traveling to Uganda, roam with MTN. With agreements with 325 GSM network operators in 144 countries, simply use your existing mobile phone and number to make and receive calls and text messages.

Our network already covers 80% of our population, including all major cities, towns and roads.

Get started

Before you travel

  • Confirm that your network has a roaming agreement with MTN Uganda and your account is activated
  • Check to see that your phone will work on our 900/1800MHz network
  • Remember your phone charger and travel adapter; we use 220 volts in Uganda
  • Ensure that your voicemail box has been set-up for remote access
  • If you are a PayAsYouGo customer, you may need to load or carry sufficient airtime credit to last your roaming duration

On arrival
  • When switching on your phone on arrival in Uganda, it will automatically select a network
  • If this does not happen automatically, choose to search manually on your phone by selecting ‘settings’, then ‘phone settings’ followed by ‘network selection’, then choose ‘manual selection’

You will receive a choice of Ugandan networks: select MTN Uganda or the code 641-10 if codes are displayed instead.

Making international calls

Remember to dial the international prefix + and enter the country code before the desired number; for example, to call the UK number 0208123456, dial +44 208123456.

Making calls to local numbers in Uganda

Just dial the local mobile phone number normally, for example, 077 212 3456.
Cost

Your home country mobile network service provider will advise you on the applicable roaming charges in Uganda when roaming on MTN.
