MTN Uganda has announced a generous one-year sponsorship deal for record breaking athlete Joshua Cheptegei.

Following several years of support to athletics in Uganda, Cheptegei becomes the first individual athlete to ink such a deal with the telecom giant.

As part of the sponsorship deal, the teIecom company also announced shs100million contribution that will go towards the Cheptegei Foundation, an organisation started by the athlete to develop young athletics talent in the country. The foundation is based in Kapchorwa.

In addition, MTN also announces a performance package for the athlete if he wins an Olympic Gold, or any other medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. There is also a performance incentive for any other world records he breaks.

Speaking at the press conference to announce the sponsorship package at the Mbale Resort Hotel today, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Wim Vanhelleputte said that the telecom company could not hide its joy after its several years of investment in the sport started bearing fruit in such significant ways as Joshua’s recent exploits.

“We are very proud and honoured to announce this sponsorship deal for Joshua. At MTN, this is the next best thing we can do after several years of investment in developing athletics talent and sport in this country. Through the renowned MTN Kampala Marathon and other Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) programs, MTN has supported the sport for over 15 years. And it is paying off. What Joshua is doing for the country is awesome and deserves to be recognized especially by his country,” Vanhelleputte said.

“Last year, MTN rewarded Joshua with a big cheque when he broke the 5000 meters record. We promised him bigger things if he continued his winning streak. We also promised to get involved in his Foundation, to help build his legacy. So, here we are again, fulfilling our pledge to him. This, I know will inspire him to go further in his career. It will also inspire other athletes to aim higher. I call upon other companies to join us in this as we inspire a greater nation,” Vanhelleputte further said.

Since 2004, MTN, in partnership with the UAF has been a part of the development of Uganda’s athletics right from the grass roots; And, it is from this partnership, that the Federation is steadily growing Uganda’s reputation as a track and field athletics powerhouse.

Through the UAF programmes and the MTN Kampala Marathon, a lot of bright talent has been identified and gone on to shine at various world championships.

Joshua’s rise started way back in 2014 when he won the World Junior Championships in Eugene United States. He became the African Junior Champion the following year, in Ethiopia. He thereafter had some quiet years before bursting onto the international stage in a powerful way, when he won in the 5000m and 10000m races at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Joshua’s star continued to rise in 2019 when he clinched gold at the World Cross Country Championships and World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark and Doha, Qatar respectively.

In sport, 2020 will be remembered among other things as the year, Cheptegei went on to break records starting with his exploits at the Monaco Diamond League meet, where he set a new 5000 metres world record of 12:35.36, breaking Kenenisa Bekele’s 16 year-old world record of 12:37.35. Later the same year, he also set a new 10000 meters world record time 26:11.00 at the NN Valencia World Record Day in Valencia, Spain breaking the previous world record of 26:17.53 that had been set by Kenenisa Bekele in 2005. On the 14th Feb 2021, Joshua retained his Monaco Run title to mark a perfect start to his 2021.

Apart from Cheptegei, Uganda boasts of other remarkable champions like Halima Nakaayi – the 2019 World Athletics Championships 800m Gold Medalist, Jacob Kiplimo – the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Junior champion, 2012 Olympic Marathon champion and 2013 World Championships gold medallist Stephen Kiprotich and Dorcus Inzikuru, one of the pioneer participants at the maiden MTN Marathon in 2004, who won the inaugural 3000m women’s steeplechase world title, as well as the first Commonwealth title in the event and many others.

“We are inspired by the results we are seeing in the sport and so reiterate our commitment to continue supporting activities of the UAF and to restore the MTN marathon as soon as we overcome this COVID pandemic and the restrictions it has had on some of these sporting activities,” Vanhelleputte said.

MTN Uganda is a fervent supporter of Uganda sports and has over the years supported various disciplines including athletics, football, basketball, golf, and many others both at national and club levels.

The MTN Uganda Foundation in partnership with Fenix International Uganda are set to light up more schools in an ongoing project dubbed “Light up a village”. With an extra donation of 190 solar kits, 56 schools from 24 districts will have light and power to facilitate proper learning outcomes by increasing reading time, secure learning environment especially in the night as well as supporting teachers’ preparation for lessons.

The Light up A Village project has so far donated over 560 solar kits across several schools in various districts in Uganda. Health centers and settlement camps have also benefitted from the same project.

Implemented in partnership with Fenix International Uganda, a next-generation energy and technology company whose mission is to improve the quality of life of customers through inclusive energy, the project is in partial fulfilment of MTN’s vision of brightening lives across all the communities within which it operates.

Speaking at the handover of the kits today, The MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer noted that: “With the availability of solar power, students can now have extended learning times and teachers can put in more preparation time which will at least try to level the ground with learners and teachers in urban areas that have easy access,” Vanhelleputte said.

He further noted that by providing solar lighting, It will provide a safe learning environment for the learners and hopefully this will encourage enrollment.

The project worth 380 million kicked off in late 2019 and has so far seen installations of solar equipment in off-grid regions like Buvuma Island where schools and health centers were lit up to improve education and health care services in the area. Still in 2019, the MTN Foundation donated and installed 100 solar kits in the Bunambutye resettlement camp in Bulambuli district while another batch of solar kits were donated to several schools in Kamuli district.

Other districts that have benefitted from this project include; Apac, Pader, Adjumani, Lira, Nwoya, Yumbe in Northern Uganda, Kanungu, Kabale, Sheema, Rukungiri, Kiruhura, Kamwenge, Kabarole, Kibale, Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Kyotera, Rakai, Luwero, Masaka as well as Bududa, Bugweri, Bukwo and Iganga.

As several learners and teachers are looking forward to having schools reopen, the acute power shortages despite being connected to the national grid is still one of the biggest challenges most schools face countrywide. This has affected performance of school children since revision time is hampered each time there is no electricity. Therefore by providing solar lighting, learners can be able to read for longer as they recover the study time they lost in the previous year 2020. Over 45,000 learners will benefit from this project.

The MTN Foundation has undertaken to support a number of government initiatives in the education sector. MTN Foundation has been building and rehabilitating schools in various parts of Uganda in partnership with PEAS. MTN Foundation has also been extending ICT skills to learning institutions through setting up fully functional ICT laboratories. The Telecom has also extended computer literacy to rural schools through MTN ICT bus. The bus is fully equipped with ICT facilities with which the children and given basic ICT training.

Speaking at the contract renewal ceremony, Vialli Bainomugisha, The Onduparaka FC Head Coach thanked MTN for its continued support over the last years, noting that the team continues in its journey of growth, in large part, due to the support from the telecom company.

“We are happy and grateful for the support that MTN has extended towards Onduparaka FC as our official sponsor. We are thrilled that our sponsors still believe in us,” Bainomugisha said.

Onduparaka FC is the most popular Football Club in West Nile. The club’s rise to the top-flight of Uganda’s super league is a source of pride for the region and has inspired young boys in the area to take up the sport.

MTN together with Onduparaka will execute several activities throughout the season to keep fans engaged in the performance of the club.

MTN Uganda is the official broadcast partner of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) on Sanyuka TV, supporting the reach of Ugandan Football in more homes and audiences across the country.

MTN partners with African Union on COVID-19 vaccinations

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, 27 JANUARY 2021: In a unique public/private partnership, MTN, Africa’s leading mobile network, has announced a donation of US$25 million to support the African Union’s COVID-19 vaccination programme.

The donation will help secure up to seven million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for health workers across the continent, which will contribute to the vaccination initiative of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The devastating impact of COVID-19 has been unprecedented and profound.  Public and private partnerships are needed if we are to succeed in the fight against the pandemic and restore social and economic norms for our continent and our communities,” says Ralph Mupita, President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group.

On 14 January 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chairperson of the African Union, announced that the African Union had secured a provisional 270 million COVID-19 vaccine doses on behalf of its Member States, through advance procurement commitment guarantees of up to US$2 billion to the manufacturers by the African Export-Import Bank.

This was an important milestone in efforts to ensure equitable access to the COVID-19 vaccine for Africa’s people. However, with a population of about 1.3 billion, Africa requires many more doses to achieve at least 60 per-cent herd immunity. Contributions by private organisations, like MTN, are therefore essential to help the continent reach its target.

Our goal is to ensure that all those who need the COVID-19 vaccine have access to it very quickly, but the biggest hurdle in Africa has been the financing of the vaccines, and the logistics of vaccinating at scale. We, therefore, welcome the right partnerships, like the one with MTN, to achieve our minimum 60 per-cent vaccination target,” says Dr John Nkengasong, Director of Africa CDC.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, MTN has made significant contributions to help limit the spread of the disease and save lives and livelihoods within its African market.

This donation is another example of MTN’s efforts to help find lasting solutions to solve the challenges facing the continent and to guarantee a healthy Africa, for all Africans.

We believe ongoing collaborations with key stakeholders across sectors are essential as vaccines are deployed in all our markets, with communication tools, technology and digital services being vital support infrastructure for a successful mass vaccination programme,” concludes Mupita. “In the coming months, MTN Group will look at similar support commitments for the markets in which we operate in the Middle East.”

MTN Uganda has launched an easy payment plan that allows customers to get smartphones and pay in easy instalments over a specified period. Named ‘Pay mpola mpola’, the scheme is another first by a telecom company in Uganda, and places MTN at the forefront of innovation in the telecom industry in Uganda.

Speaking during the unveiling of the Scheme, MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer Sen Somdev said the idea behind this scheme is to give many Ugandans access to the internet through easing affordability of smartphones; at payment terms which are manageable.

“MTN believes the everyone deserves the benefit of a modern connected life and has since 2011 implemented various strategies to make access to the internet more affordable and accessible to all,” Somdev said.

Somdev further explained that while many people would like to enjoy the experience of the Internet, access to affordable smart phones, has remained a challenge. With the introduction of this easy payment plan and an affordable smartphone offer to it, MTN will be putting the internet and its benefits in the hands of many more Ugandans.

To kick-start this scheme, MTN has unveiled the MTN Kabode – a new high-speed internet smartphone that customers will initially be able to buy under the ‘pay mpola mpola’ scheme. The new phone is a quality device that has been tested in other MTN operations as well as approved by the local regulator. The smartphone gives customers access to the MyMTN, Ayoba, WhatsApp, TIDAL (the music app) and Facebook apps, among others.

As part of the offer, customers will also get free MBs every month as they pay for the phone in easy instalments. However, the offer of free MBs offer is a feature that comes with all new smart phones that activate an MTN SIM card regardless of where you buy it.

Somdev however emphasized that the new financing scheme is not a loan scheme. “We are not a financial institution, and this is not a loan. MTN is just providing access to high end quality phones but on an instalment payment basis,” he said.

MTN Uganda under its enterprise arm of MTN Business has launched a first of its kind 3-in-1 offer for businesses in Uganda. The offer is designed to help businesses get more out of their operations with more control for business owners while allowing them to concentrate on growing their business.

The three in one offer encompasses Voice, Internet, and MoMo for business, making it easy for enterprise customers to run their business operations effectively with the same seamless experience that MTN as a corporate entity has come to be known for.

As part of the deal, business customers signing up for the offer will receive free service installation on fixed voice, discounted transaction fees on MoMo for Business, as well as free installation, free subscription for the first month, discounts on monthly subscription fees plus free domain registration and hosting for a year for the internet solutions.

Ibrahim Ssenyonga, the MTN Business General Manager said, “Many times businesses think using multiple providers gives them more reliability and lower costs. Instead, managing multiple providers gives you headache.”

“At MTN, we believe that it’s better to find a provider who has all the coverage and solutions you need, can be your single point of contact and you can take advantage of economies of scale for not just better pricing, but more efficient delivery as well,” Ssenyonga said.

Ssenyonga went on to explain that the recent changes with COVID19 have taught business owners that more people are going to be transacting online including making

orders and payments making it even more imperative that the business community adapts to the new normal.

“COVID19 has changed the way people do things. Businesses that have quickly adopted remote ways of working stand a good chance of survival as more people seek convenience that comes with online trading. This new offer is therefore part of MTN’s wider scheme to further consolidate its effort at supporting and enabling SMEs and the business community in Uganda in general,” he said.

Ssenyonga further explained that because Uganda is one of the most entrepreneurial nations in the world, MTN considers it a duty to support this spirit. “MTN continues to inspire and enable the growth of our business customers in Uganda through integrated telecommunications solutions that ensure efficiency and productivity.”

“Under MTN Business, MTN Uganda has always embraced technology to create innovative solutions that allow our customers to focus on their core business as we enable their technology and communication needs. This is just another way we show our commitment towards this,” Ssenyonga said.
