Kyenjojo District, Uganda – Today, MTN Uganda, through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm, MTN Foundation, celebrates the achievements of 571 youth, including 309 females, who successfully graduated with ICT certificates from the company’s Digital Literacy Program.

The initiative, designed to empower youth and address the digital divide, has been a key pillar of MTN’s broader mission to foster digital inclusivity across Uganda.

The graduates completed 10 intensive days of training through MTN’s innovative Internet Bus and MTN Skills Academy – an online platform that offers mobile digital education to underserved communities.

The training sessions took place across various locations in western Uganda, including at Hoima Public Library in Hoima District, Rap Tech Institute of Business and Technology in Ntungamo District, Nakivale Vocational Training Centre in Isingiro District, and Hearts and Hands Vocational Institute in Kyenjojo District.

This program aims to inspire graduates to leverage their newly acquired ICT skills to pursue higher education, explore entrepreneurial ventures, or seek employment opportunities.

Since inception, the Digital Literacy Program has equipped 4795 youth with essential skills, with a long-term goal to train one million young people by 2025 through the MTN Skills Academy.

“The digital training initiative aligns with MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, which is dedicated to advancing digital transformation and ensuring that all Ugandans, regardless of their economic or social background, can enjoy the benefits of a connected life,” said Bryan Mbasa, Senior Manager at MTN Foundation during the graduation ceremony at Heart and Hands Foundation.

The program, valued at over Shs500 million and provided free of charge in partnership with Maendeleo Foundation, a local non-governmental organization,  is part of a larger effort to support the Ugandan government’s Vision 2040, National Development Plan III, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives focus on inclusivity, equity, and economic empowerment for all Ugandans.

“Increasing youth unemployment is a significant challenge in Uganda, while businesses face a growing demand for skilled workers in digital technology. This program, in partnership with various ICT stakeholders, aims to address this gap by equipping youth who may not have had the opportunity with the skills they need to succeed in today’s tough economic environment,” Mbasa said.

Uganda’s youthful population—over three-quarters of w hom are under the age of 30—holds tremendous potential for the nation’s future. Yet, high unemployment rates, particularly for women at 16.3%, present an ongoing challenge. As Uganda continues to experience a shortage of ICT skills, bridging the digital skills gap is critical for job seekers and employers alike.

“Urgent action is needed to help young people develop their digital capabilities and access learning and employment opportunities,” Mbasa emphasized. “That is why equipping youth with the tools to thrive in the digital economy is one of our top priorities.”

MTN Uganda has also established 48 ICT labs in educational institutions nationwide, benefiting thousands of learners. This includes six technical institutes, such as Amelo Technical Institute in Adjumani District, St. Simon Peter’s Vocational Training Centre in Hoima District, and St. Daniel Comboni Polytechnic in Moroto District.

Empowering Uganda’s youth with digital skills not only improves their individual employment prospects but also enhances the labour market by boosting productivity, fostering innovation, and driving economic growth.

“Without inclusive, equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all, Uganda will struggle to achieve gender equality and break the cycle of poverty,” Mbasa added.

The celebration also featured a learner’s quiz, where the best-performing participants were awarded laptops and mi-fi devices with three months of internet access, enabling them to continue their learning journey and share their knowledge within their communities.

Julian Ayesiga Akiiki, the Resident District Commissioner for Kyenjojo District, commended MTN Uganda for collaborating with the government to empower the youth by providing them with essential skills to enhance their lives and positively impact their communities.

“To the graduates, I say this: You hold the future in your hands. The knowledge you have gained in the training is your stepping-stone to greater achievements,” she said.

“Whether you choose to further your education, start a business, or enter the workforce, the digital skills you now possess will serve you well. Remember, the world is rapidly changing, and those who can adapt, innovate, and embrace technology will be the leaders of tomorrow.”

This year, MTN Uganda has contributed Ushs. 247 million towards supporting both the bicycle races and the football tournament, reaffirming its long-standing partnership with the Kingdom. The County Bicycle Races and the Enganda Football Tournament will be held across the 15 counties of Bunyoro Kitara, engaging local communities through healthy competition and promoting unity while rewarding outstanding participants.

Speaking at the launch event, Abel Mwesigye, MTN Uganda’s Regional Business Manager, emphasized the importance of this partnership.

“MTN Uganda takes great pride in being a trusted partner to the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. This year’s investment demonstrates our commitment to promoting talent, unity, and community development. By supporting sports, we are not only celebrating our cultural heritage but also empowering young people to participate in activities that can boost the local economy,” Mwesigye said.

The MTN County Bicycle Races will include both men’s and women’s categories, while the Enganda Football Tournament will feature male participants from all the clans, competing to showcase their skills. These events will help promote the values of unity, resilience, and healthy competition within the Kingdom.

MTN Uganda’s partnership with Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom goes beyond sports. Over the years, MTN has supported various initiatives that have improved access to health and education services, as well as contributed to environmental conservation in the region. The launch of these tournaments is yet another step towards enhancing the lives of the people of Bunyoro Kitara.

The football and bicycle competitions symbolize a future of unity, where cultural heritage is preserved while driving social and economic transformation hinged on the belief that Together, we’re unstoppable.

The action-packed weekend in the MTN Busoga Masaza Cup saw drama unfold across various grounds, with teams vying for crucial quarter-final spots. Bugweri stole the show on Saturday with a dominant 6-0 win, while Kigulu secured their place in the knockouts on Sunday despite a frustrating goalless draw.

Saturday’s Showdown: Bugweri Thrashes Depleted Bulamogi

Saturday’s fixtures provided thrilling contests, none more so than Bugweri’s emphatic 6-0 demolition of a depleted Bulamogi side at Busesa Mixed Playground. Despite the match starting late due to security protocols, Bugweri made the most of their numerical advantage, facing a Bulamogi team with only eight outfield players.

Bugweri’s relentless attack was spearheaded by Arafat Nkola, who netted a second-half hat-trick, while Edgar Kigundu, Nicolous Kilubira, and Daniel Bacachi also found the back of the net. The victory revived Bugweri’s hopes of advancing from the Nendha Hill group, putting them in second place with 7 points, just behind Busiki on 9 points.

Coach Emmanuel Balyejusa of Bugweri expressed relief and confidence ahead of their decider against Budiope. “Today’s three points were crucial. The heavy scoreline gives my players the momentum they need ahead of the do-or-die clash with Budiope,” said Balyejusa.

For Bulamogi, it was a demoralising defeat, with coach Mohammed Mugaya citing financial difficulties as the root cause of their struggles. “Let Bugweri not think they were strong; we were missing key players due to financial constraints. We call upon well-wishers to support Bulamogi because football unites us all,” Mugaya stated.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Bukono edged out Bunhole Bunhanhumba 1-0 in the Mawembe Hill group, increasing their chances of progressing. Luuka pulled off a surprise 1-0 victory over Bukooli Bugiri in the Bukowe Hill group, while Bukooli Namayingo kept their knockout hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Buzaaya in the Kagulu Hill group.

Sunday’s Clashes: Kigulu and Budiope Make Their Mark

On Sunday, Kigulu secured their spot in the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Bunha at Buluuba Hospital Playground in the Bukowe Hill group. Kigulu, two-time champions, dominated the match but were left frustrated by a lack of finishing, with veteran striker Jamil Mukungu’s header striking the post in the first half. Despite the missed opportunities, coach Hamid Balikoowa was pleased with the result.

“We came for three points, but this draw was enough to see us through. We’ve faced challenges, with many players missing due to exams, but we’re thrilled to progress to the quarter-finals,” said Balikoowa. Kigulu now leads the group with 9 points, followed by Luuka on 6.

Bunha, despite their struggles, still hold hope of advancing. “We’ve been fighting hard, even with financial challenges where players had to transport themselves today. We’ll keep pushing in the final match,” Bunha coach William Mulumba said.

In another pivotal match on Sunday, Budiope stunned defending champions Busiki with a 1-0 victory at Irundu Playground, claiming top spot in the Nendha Hill group. Budiope now leads with 10 points, while Busiki drops to second with 9 points. The result sets up a tantalising decider next weekend, where Budiope will face Bugweri, who sit third with 7 points.

Up Next!

As the group stages draw to a close, the race for quarter-final spots intensifies. Buzaaya has already secured their place in the Kagulu Hill group, but all eyes will be on next weekend’s clash between former winners Butembe and Bukooli Namayingo, both locked on 4 points.

In the Mawembe Hill group, Bugabula has already qualified, but second place is still up for grabs as bottom-placed Bunhole Bunhanhumba (3 points) look to leapfrog Bukono (4 points) in the final round of matches.

With four matches on Saturday and two on Sunday to close out the second round, the MTN Busoga Masaza Cup promises more excitement as the quarter-finals loom.

Nebbi Municipality – Padyere County secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Okoro County in the latest round of the Kopu P’Ubimo inter-county football tournament, despite playing much of the second half with ten men. The match, held on Saturday, 28th September 2024, at the Luo Playground in Nebbi Municipality, saw the defending champions maintain their unbeaten start to the competition.

Padyere took control early, with forward Womanya Henry opening the scoring in the first half. However, their momentum was disrupted when striker Emmanuel Agenonga received a second yellow card, leaving the team a man down for the majority of the second half. Despite the setback, Padyere displayed grit and determination, holding on to their lead and even doubling it before the final whistle.

This win marks Padyere’s first victory in the tournament after a 1-1 draw midweek against Jonam County. Head coach Gilbert Jakuma praised his team’s resilience, particularly in light of their numerical disadvantage.

“My team worked hard to claim all three points because our table was reading red. You know, the match between Padyere and Okoro was like a litmus test for the champions because every county is working hard to break our records,” said Jakuma, whose side is the reigning champion from the 6th edition of the tournament.

For Okoro County, the defeat further dampens their hopes of progressing in this year’s edition of the competition. After a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Jonam County in their opening fixture, Okoro now sits at the bottom of the table, yet to register a point or score a goal.

The Kopu P’Ubimo football tournament, held in partnership with MTN Uganda and Ker Alur, is a key part of the celebrations leading up to the 14th coronation anniversary of Phillips Ularker Rauni III. Four matches have been played so far in the 7th edition, and competition is heating up as counties vie for top honors.

MTN Uganda’s Territory Sales Manager, Taban Godwin, commended the participants for their discipline and focus. “MTN is committed to amplifying business partnerships with communities in Alur land through networking and communications,” said Godwin, reinforcing the company’s dedication to supporting local initiatives.

Meanwhile, the 3rd edition of the bicycle races, initially scheduled to take place alongside the football matches, has been postponed. Executive Director of the Alur Kingdom, Vincent Ochaya, confirmed that conflicting district activities hindered participant turnout, prompting the delay.

In a significant leap towards  Uganda’s digital transformation journey, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) successfully conducted the country’s first-ever digital national population and housing census in May. This milestone marks a radical shift from traditional data collection methods and showcases the transformative power of digital tools in public sector operations.

For the first time, the census data was collected, processed, and analyzed digitally, enabling UBOS to release preliminary results in a record-breaking time of just one month. This rapid turnaround represents a significant improvement over the manual processes used in previous censuses, which could take months, if not years, to finalize.

This remarkable achievement was facilitated by UBOS’s partnership with MTN Uganda, a key enabler in the country’s digitalization journey.  MTN provided the critical digital infrastructure required for the seamless data collection through their extensive network and advanced digital technologies.

Ivan Atwiine, Head of Digital Solutions at UBOS, highlighted the role MTN played during the census.

“We had two types of connections during the census,” he explains. “First, we utilized an APN connection, where a SIM card in each tablet connected directly to our servers. This method provided a more secure and streamlined data transfer process. Additionally, MTN provided internet access at our data center, enabling us to conduct more advanced analyses and secure cloud storage as a backup solution.”

The introduction of digital tools in the census process not only reduced the time and effort required to gather data but also increased accuracy and security, ensuring that the final data set is more reliable. This was a critical step in ensuring Uganda can access accurate population insights faster, aiding in better planning and policy-making at both the local and national levels.

As one of the key drivers of Uganda’s digital transformation, the telecom giant continues to invest heavily in infrastructure and technologies that enable institutions like UBOS to embrace digital solutions. These investments align with MTN’s commitment tolead digital solutions for Uganda’s progress, which encompasses digital innovations that enhance operations for both public and private sector players under the the initiative “business done better”.

Ivan Atwiine, the Head of digital solutions department at UBOS speaking about the country’s first ever digital census supported by MTN

As Uganda celebrates the success of its first digital census, the implications extend far beyond this single project. The efficiency and accuracy demonstrated by UBOS offer a blueprint for other digital initiatives, from e-governance to healthcare digitization.

Moving forward, UBOS and MTN’s collaboration could serve as a model for other public sector players looking to harness technology for public sector innovation.

“We appreciate the support from MTN and thank them for the role they have played in the digital transformation of the country for us as digital players in the market,” added Atwiine, underscoring the significance of such partnerships in shaping Uganda’s digital future.

Nebbi, Uganda – Jonam County kicked off their campaign in the 7th edition of the MTN Uganda Ker Alur Kopu P’Ubimo inter-county football competition with a convincing 2-0 victory over Okoro County. The match, part of the lead-up to the 14th coronation anniversary of His Majesty Phillips Ularker Rauni III, saw Jonam claim an important away win, securing the top spot in the early stages of the tournament.

After a goalless first half, Jonam came out firing in the second half, with Samuel Pirwoth delivering a stellar performance. Pirwoth found the back of the net twice, securing the crucial win for his side. Reflecting on his match-winning display, Pirwoth said, “I’m optimistic and well-prepared. We’re determined to outplay the defending champions, Padyere, in our next game.” Jonam will face Padyere at home on Wednesday, 25th September, at Bar Omach.

The Ker Alur Kopu P’Ubimo competition serves as more than just a football tournament. The event, in partnership with Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) Uganda, includes bicycle races and aims to bring together the youth of Alur. The 7th edition aligns with the 14th coronation anniversary of His Majesty Phillips Ularker Rauni III and promotes a key theme of “Positive Parenting in Ending Child Marriages and Teenage Pregnancy,” with a focus on keeping girls in school for a brighter future.

Alur Kingdom Executive Director, Vincent Ochaya, emphasized the broader cultural significance of the tournament, stating, “All the activities are geared toward celebrating the 14th anniversary of our king, Phillips Ularker Rauni III. The focus is not just on sports, but also on promoting our culture and encouraging positive behavior among our youth.”

Jonam’s head coach, Peter Simon, echoed these sentiments, adding, “These competitions must build a strong bond among the players and within the kingdom, with the goal of promoting talent through sporting activities.” Jonam’s victory sets the stage for their next encounter with defending champions Padyere, as they aim to extend their winning run.

MTN Uganda, through its philanthropic arm MTN Foundation, has supported Tunaweza Foundation, a non-governmental organization, with 10 computers as part of its Digital Access Program.

This initiative is a key component of MTN ambition 2025 strategy to support the country’s digital transformation by enhancing digital literacy and inclusion, particularly among underserved communities and individuals with disabilities.

The support, valued at UGX 65 million, also includes one year of free internet access and backup inverter systems. The newly inaugurated computer lab at Tunaweza Foundation represents just one of several projects under MTN Uganda’s broader effort to bridge the digital divide and provide essential tools for success in the digital age.

Augustine Lule, the MTN Central Region Business Manager, on behalf of the Senior Manager at MTN Foundation emphasized the transformative power of technology in fostering inclusion and connectivity.

“Access to technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity,” Lule said during the handover event. “We are committed to ensuring that every Ugandan, regardless of their background or abilities, benefits from a modern connected life.”

With 77 percent of Uganda’s population under the age of 30, there is an increasing need for digital skills. However, many individuals, particularly those with disabilities, lack the opportunities to acquire these essential skills.

Victo Nalule, the Executive Director of Tunaweza Foundation, commended MTN Uganda for its support, noting its impact on vulnerable community members.

“These computers will significantly enhance our ability to equip our youth, including those with disabilities, with vital digital skills,” she said, highlighting that over 500 people will benefit from this initiative.

Ellen Masi, the U.S. Mission’s Public Affairs Counselor and the chief guest at the event, also praised MTN Uganda’s contribution to digital inclusion.

“Technology is integral to everything we do, from education to employment. By providing access to this computer lab, we are ensuring that children and youth—regardless of their background or abilities—have the tools they need to excel in the digital era,” she said.

The computer lab at Tunaweza Foundation is the first of several planned projects under MTN Foundation’s Digital Access Program. Other planned beneficiaries include Code Campus in Mbuya, St. Joseph’s Nyenga Seminary, Revival Girls in Mbarara, St. Catherine Girls in Kazo, and St. John’s Secondary School in Sheema.

With an overall investment exceeding UGX 390 million, MTN Foundation is establishing computer labs across various communities to improve ICT access and foster inclusive educational opportunities. These labs aim to provide individuals with the digital skills necessary to unlock their potential.

This initiative, which aligns with MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, supports Uganda’s Vision 2040, National Development Plan III, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over the years, MTN Uganda has supported the establishment of more than 42 ICT labs in educational institutions, vocational centers, and prisons, often in partnership with organizations such as Enabel, the Belgian Development Agency.

MTN Uganda, in continued partnership with the Tooro Kingdom, proudly celebrated the 27th coronation anniversary of His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV at this year’s Empango celebrations, under the theme, “Promoting Heritage for Livelihoods, Identity, and Development.” In honor of this occasion, MTN Uganda extended a contribution of UGX 30 million to support the preparations for the celebrations.

Speaking during the event, Andrew Tusubira, the MTN Regional Commercial Head -Western Uganda expressed MTN’s bliss in partnering with the Tooro Kingdom, recognizing the critical role the kingdom has played in maintaining a strong relationship. “We are honored to partner with the Tooro Kingdom. This partnership exemplifies our dedication to societal development. By leveraging our resources, we support the Kingdom’s goals in health, education, and youth empowerment while championing its cultural heritage. MTN is committed to advancing the Kingdom’s progress and connecting its communities to a brighter future,” Tusubira said.

MTN Uganda’s partnership with the Tooro Kingdom has been instrumental in fostering unity and socioeconomic development. Since the partnership was formalized in 2019, the two entities have worked towards improving key areas such as health, education, and youth empowerment. This relationship is guided by MTN’s belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life.

Earlier this year, His Majesty King Oyo made a historic visit to the MTN Uganda headquarters in Kampala. The visit underscored the importance of the collaboration between MTN Uganda and the Tooro Kingdom in driving developmental initiatives in Education, sports, health, and other vital areas. King Oyo, who was warmly received by MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge and the MTN executive team, toured the MTN call center, planted a tree as a symbol of environmental sustainability, and held discussions on future collaborations between MTN and the Kingdom.

MTN Uganda’s long-standing partnership with the Tooro Kingdom continues to demonstrate the power of collaboration in achieving shared goals. This relationship has seen significant investments in health services, such as the refurbishment of Kijuura Health Centre III in 2020, which improved maternal healthcare services for the local population.

Under sports, the 3rd edition of the MTN Sponsored Tooro Masaza Football tournament is underway with the grand finale set to happen later this month.

As MTN Uganda and Tooro Kingdom continue their journey, together, they remain unstoppable in their commitment to creating sustainable development that will benefit the people of Tooro for generations to come. Their partnership stands as a testament to the impact that unity, culture, and collaboration can have on communities.
