- The MTN@25 AWE project aligns with MTN Uganda’s commitment to gender equality, youth empowerment, and inclusivity in the technology sector.
- Women entrepreneurs specializing in IT, network services, digital solutions, facility management, and commercial products and services are encouraged to apply.
- The initiative aims to empower women entrepreneurs, promote diversity, and strengthen Uganda’s technology sector while fostering opportunities for all.
MTN Uganda, a leading telecommunications and digital solutions provider, extends a warm invitation to women entrepreneurs across the nation to participate in the groundbreaking “MTN@25 Advancing Women Entrepreneurs” (AWE), an inspiring collaborative endeavor in partnership with MTN Mobile Money (MOMO), The American Tower Corporation (ATC), UN Women, The Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), DFCU Bank, Innovation Village, NSSF Hi Innovators and Outbox. This initiative underscores MTN Uganda’s unwavering commitment to fostering a more inclusive and connected society, echoing our belief in the power of collaboration and the MTN annual theme of “Together, we are Unstoppable.”
The AWE project aspires to usher in a new era of improved business ownership, enriched diversity, and enhanced equality in the supply chain. It seeks to champion women’s participation and commendable contributions to the thriving tech industry.
At the launch, Sylvia Mulinge, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer aptly stated, “As part of our commitment to this cause, we are determined to increase the local spend on women entrepreneurs participating in the top spend categories in the telecom industry and build an inclusive market-oriented platform that supports and attracts women entrepreneurs.”
On average, women-owned microenterprises in Uganda generate 30 percent lower profits than their male counterparts (World Bank 2019). Lower levels of innovation, lower use of capital and labor, and sector-based sex segregation are all factors associated with women entrepreneurs’ poorer business outcomes relative to men in Uganda. Moreover, women enterprise owners in Uganda also use 41 percent fewer hours of labor, have 50 percent less capital, and are 37 percent less likely to have introduced a new product over the previous 12 months compared with men.
Sylvia Mulinge, MTN CEO, also stated, “The AWE project aligns with our core values and strategic vision, which is to create opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender or background. The goal of the AWE project is ambitious yet achievable. Our vision is to have 250 women suppliers by 2025, with the aim of onboarding 50 women by the end of this year. MTN Uganda will be investing $4 million (UGX 15,029,428,000) into this project because we recognize that women entrepreneurs possess immense potential, and by inviting them to join our supply chain, we intend to empower them, promote diversity, and fortify the technology sector in Uganda. This initiative serves as a testament to our commitment to a more inclusive and equitable future.”
The AWE project represents a cornerstone of MTN Uganda’s sustainability approach, marked by a resolute focus on gender equality, unwavering support for women in business, and the empowerment of the youth, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities.
MTN Uganda is proud to collaborate with a consortium of strategic partners to drive the Advancing Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) project. MTN and MTN Mobile Money (MOMO) will oversee the EOI process, ensure women’s participation in RFPs, and offer comprehensive training and financial support. The American Tower Corporation (ATC) will provide business opportunities and assist in candidate selection, while UN Women will raise awareness and strengthen partnerships. The Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), DFCU Bank, and Innovation Village will promote entrepreneurship, provide mentorship, and offer financial support. NSSF Hi Innovators will offer brand support and financing. Together, we aim to increase women’s participation in the telecom supply chain, support financial sustenance, and create a more inclusive marketplace, with a goal of onboarding 50 women by the end of the year and 250 women suppliers by 2025.

Bringing UN Women into this MTN AWE program means you will have access to these women, as there is a level of trust between them & us.”
Charles M. Mudiwa, Managing Director, DFCU Bank Uganda, stated, “DFCU has embarked on a dedicated journey to support women entrepreneurs since 2007. Our guiding principle has been the recognition that many women exert tremendous effort, yet opportunities for them to secure financing were scarce. Over the years, this commitment has yielded exponential growth. Internally, we express our sincere gratitude to MTN and all our valued partners who have played an instrumental role in making this endeavor possible.”
Alex Rumanyika, Head of Strategy at NSSF, mentioned, “The Fund, through the Hi-Innovator Programme, has joined MTN Uganda for their Advancing Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) project aimed at empowering and supporting enterprising women in starting, growing, and sustaining their businesses. This initiative aligns with the Fund’s effort to support early-stage Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs) with patient capital, technical assistance, and linkages to markets and affordable financing to make them competitive and investment-ready through Hi-Innovator.”
Arthur Mukembo, Lead FutureLab Studio, said, “At Innovation Village, we foster an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs to adopt tech and tech-enabled solutions to enable them to solidify their business value proposition, validate an investable market, and move beyond early adopters to accelerate the growth of their enterprise. We seek ways to double down to leverage technology to create more opportunities for women businesses to benefit from the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.”
Stephen Asiimwe, Chief Executive Officer of Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), commended Sylvia and her team for their visionary initiative. He stated, “This is not just a simple beginning; it’s the inception of a movement, a catalyst for change that is gaining momentum with every passing moment. As we take these first steps, let us all remember that revolutions are built on the passion, resilience, and commitment of individuals who dare to dream and act. Together, we can turn the tides and create a brighter future for all.”
Dorothy Kabgambe Ssemanda, Chief Executive Officer of ATC Uganda, explained, “Currently, more than 90% of our annual high spend on engineering projects is executed by suppliers which are not women-owned or operated. This is a narrative we are here to change, a shift we are dedicated to leading. We have taken a solid step in this direction by ring-fencing a proportion of contracts exclusively for AWE candidates. We acknowledge the high working capital requirements, and we are here to navigate these waters together. To ensure the success and growth of AWE candidates, ATC will offer robust technical training and field assistance, covering a broad spectrum from onboarding to customized training tailored for unique challenges. Our support does not end post-award. We will continue to provide field-based assistance, monitor progress, and award additional work based on improvements and performance.”

The MTN Tooro Kingdom Masaza took center stage as hundreds of spectators flocked to Katooke modern Playground on June 2, 2023, to witness the adrenaline-fueled Bicycle Races and the highly-anticipated Tooro Masaza MTN Football tournament. The joint-hosted events captivated the audience, showcasing remarkable talent and intense competition.
In a display of sheer determination, 36 riders from Mwenge North showcased their cycling prowess in the MTN sponsored Tooro Kingdom Bicycle Race. Covering a challenging distance of approximately 30 kilometers from Katooke Town Council to Mabira and back, the riders navigated the route with finesse and returned unscathed.
“I’m glad MTN Uganda in coordination with the Tooro Kingdom have kept the custom of these races in a bid to appreciate our talents,” expressed Aaron Muhumuza, a resident of Katooke and a double winner in the sports bikes category. Muhumuza, who failed to secure a top-five position in last year’s ordinary races, credited his decision to try his luck in the sports bikes category for his triumph.
The winners in the sports bicycles category included Ibrahim Kawooya, Mugisha Emmanuel, Aaron Muhumuza, Muwonge Muzamil, and Ahebwa Vincent Byoma. Meanwhile, the ordinary bikes category saw Amanyire Wilson, Alituha Rodger, Tukugize David, Tumusiime Leo, and Amanya Wilson emerge as victors. These riders were rewarded with funds ranging from 500,000 to 100,000 Ugandan shillings, respectively, according to their respective categories.
The Tooro Kingdom county chief, Adolf Baseka Musinguzi, commended MTN Uganda and the Tooro Kingdom for their collaboration in organizing the bicycle race. Baseka urged the winners to continue pushing themselves in training to surpass their counterparts from other counties, emphasizing the importance of sustained effort in achieving excellence.
On the same action-packed day, the MTN-sponsored Tooro Kingdom Masaza Football tournament continued to heat up the competition. Fort Portal City faced off against Kyaka County in the first match, which ended in a goalless draw. In the following match, Kyaka secured a 2-1 victory over Mwenge North, solidifying their spot in the semi-finals. Mwenge North’s tenacity paid off in their final match against Fort Portal City, as they claimed a narrow 1-0 victory.
Hon. Tom Bright, the Kyegegwa MP and a supporter of the Kyaka team, delivered a message of sportsmanship and non-violence to the players. He acknowledged the Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza football tournament as a platform that not only discovers and nurtures youth talent but also serves as a reminder that there is life beyond the games.
Owek. Wandera Micheal, the Tooro Kingdom sports minister, highlighted the significance of these competitions in engaging the youth in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He expressed his appreciation for MTN’s support in various aspects, including the Masaza football tournament and the provision of hospital beds.
The MTN Tooro Kingdom Masaza continues to captivate audiences, celebrating the region’s rich sporting talents and fostering community engagement. Through the partnership between MTN Uganda and the Tooro Kingdom, these events stand as testaments to the power of sports in driving positive change and inspiring young individuals to reach their full potential.

MTN Uganda together with its partners Huawei, Stanbic bank, New Vision, Rwenzori, NBS TV and KCCA – the host city, have announced the 2022 edition of the MTN Kampala Marathon, which shall take place on Sunday 20th November 2022 under the theme; “Run for Babies”. This announcement comes after a two-year break due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
First run in 2004, the MTN Kampala Marathon has been a mainstay on the Ugandan sports calendar and a major springboard for East Africa’s elite athletes. In addition to being the most professional Marathon in the region, the MTN Kampala Marathon has earned its place as the biggest charity-inspired marathon, giving participants a good reason to run, not only for their own health and fitness but to also contribute to projects that have supported communities over the years.
While launching the MTN Kampala Marathon 2022 at the MTN Uganda Head offices today, Sylvia Mulinge, the MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer announced that the proceeds from this year’s Marathon shall be used again to upgrade maternal and newborn facilities in health centers across the country.
“As a continuation to the tremendous impact that the Marathon has achieved over the past years, this year’s marathon proceeds shall similarly be dedicated to further improving the selected maternal and neonatal health facilities, by refurbishing and equipping them to save the lives of mothers and babies,” Mulinge said, urging the public to participate and contribute in the noble cause.
As is the case in many sub-Saharan countries, statistics indicate that there are an estimated 336 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and 43 infant deaths per 1000 live births in Uganda, with 42% of the children’s mortality occurring during the neonatal period (source: Uganda Health and Demographic Survey, 2016 – UNFPA).
“It is therefore through such initiatives that the public and corporate companies can join hands with the government to ensure better health service delivery that is critical in the elimination of these preventable deaths among mothers and babies.
Over the years, contributions from the MTN Kampala Marathon have supported the area of maternal and child health tremendously. Ush. 900m was raised from the MTN Marathon editions of 2018 and 2019 and that together with a top of Ush.400m from MTN Foundation was used to refurbish maternal wards in four health centers across the country.
Working with the Ministry of Health and UNFPA as the implementing partners, the health centers of Kawempe Hospital in Kampala, Muyembe Health Center IV in Bulambuli district, Pakwach HC IV in Pakwach district, Kalangala HC IV in Kalangala district, and Karugutu HC IV in Ntoroko district, were refurbished and equipped with neo-natal equipment, using proceeds from 2018 and 2019. The facilities are fully operational, offering mothers and newborns much-needed healthcare services.
Proceeds from this year’s Marathon shall be used to upgrade maternal and newborn services in four selected health facilities across the country. The beneficiary health facilities include Kisenyi and Kawaala health facilities in the suburbs of Kampala plus those in Kachumbala (Teso sub-region) and Kabong (Karamoja sub-region)
The 2022 edition of the MTN Kampala Marathon will be held on Sunday 20th November starting at the Kololo independence grounds with runners participating in any of 4 categories including; the full marathon (42Km), half marathon (21Km), 10Km race and 5Km fun run. The wheelchair race (10Km) shall be held on Sunday 13th November 2022.
This year’s kit features a running belt that offers a secure and convenient way for runners to keep their valuables and water bottle to rehydrate, while they run.
Over the years, contributions from the MTN Kampala Marathon have supported the area of maternal and child health tremendously. Ushs.900m was raised from the MTN Marathon editions of 2018 and 2019 and that together with a top of Ushs.400m from MTN Foundation, was used to refurbish maternal wards in four health centers across the country,
The MTN Kampala Marathon has, over the years raised Ushs 4bn+ and benefitted several causes such as helping expectant mothers with maternity kit, resettling people displaced by war in northern Uganda, delivering clean water and improving sanitation in communities/schools, and most recently, improving maternal in health facilities.
The MTN Marathon pledges to continue playing its role in connecting and uniting Ugandans to causes that make a difference in the lives of thousands (if not millions) across the country.
